A principios de este mes la plataforma Netflix estrenaba por primera vez una producción danesa: The Rain. Compuesta por ocho episodios en su primera temporada, esta serie narra las vicisitudes de un grupo de adolescentes en un mundo donde casi la totalidad de la población humana ha sido exterminada por causa de un virus que se propaga a través de la lluvia.
Seis años atrás, una lluvia torrencial acabó con la población de Escandinavia. Escondidos en un bunker, dos hermanos sobrevivieron a la catástrofe. Pero con el paso del tiempo, aislados y sedientos de respuestas, ambos abandonan la seguridad de su refugio y se unen a un grupo de supervivientes. Juntos deberán lidiar con un entorno hostil donde la sensación de peligro es constante. Basta una simple gota de agua contaminada para morir entre terribles dolores.
En este ambiente de riesgo permanente, donde la escasez de recursos y la ambientación tétrica —muy similar a la presentada en la también exitosa The Dark— se imponen, la naturaleza humana y los conflictos de intereses afloran con mayor intensidad, poniendo a prueba al grupo y llevándolo a situaciones límite.
La premisa, si bien nos resulta conocida —no en vano algunos críticos han resaltado ya las similitudes entre esta serie y otras de gran éxito como The Walking Dead— pone de manifiesto la buena acogida y el éxito que vive actualmente el género post-apocalíptico. Y más concretamente de la distopía climática, también conocida como climate fiction.
La característica principal de esta subgénero dentro de la ciencia ficción distópica es que las historias tienen como escenario el planeta Tierra, donde la mano del hombre ha desencadenado una catástrofe irreparable. El aumento descontrolado de la temperatura —y en ocasiones el descenso desmedido— han destruido el equilibrio climático del planeta, que ahora se presenta como un hábitat hostil para los grupos de supervivientes.
La reflexión sobre el futuro incierto de la humanidad y su repercusión en el medio, que inspiró a mediados del siglo pasado a no pocos autores, está dando lugar hoy día a numerosas obras de ficción en la pequeña y la gran pantalla que, en la misma línea de The Rain, abordan desde un punto de vista crítico el daño irreparable que el ser humano causa en su entorno, abocándolo a la destrucción absoluta en el peor de los casos.
Algunas de estas obras son la ya conocida película El día de mañana, producida por Roland Emmerich, donde el cambio climático precipita la Tierra hacia una repentina y violenta Edad de Hielo que cubre el mundo en menos de una semana. Otro referente podría ser la serie The Mist, adaptación de la obra homónima de Stephen King, con la que The Rain guarda ciertas similitudes en lo que a angustiante y claustrofóbica se refiere. En The Mist, si bien el componente terrorífico se apodera de la trama, no hay olvidar que el origen de la misteriosa niebla que cubre la ciudad de Bridgton y los monstruos que la habitan se halla en la acción del hombre, en un fallido experimento humano.
En cualquier caso, en tono crítico que invita a la reflexión, han alineado a la climate fiction con la rama especulativa de la ciencia ficción. Ante un futuro desolador es conveniente ser conscientes de qué camino estamos tomando y cuál será el precio a pagar por ello.
The Rain, del mismo modo que la obra de reputados autores de climate fiction como pueden ser George Turner, J. G. Ballard o el reputado Paolo Bacigalupi, pone al espectador frente a frente con la realidad que aguarda a la humanidad si no es capaz de corregir el rumbo y le invita a preguntarse si de verdad desea vivir en un mundo donde los valores se sacrifican en pro de los intereses propios y las personas deben sacar a relucir su lado más oscuro con tal de sobrevivir.
Tal vez sea por su capacidad de inducir a la reflexión que este género goza actualmente de tanta popularidad. En cualquier caso, a la espera de saber si The Rain contará con nueva temporada en un futuro próximo, tal vez sea momento de adentrarse en este apasionante subgénero que es la climate fiction. Subgénero sobre el cual hablaremos con mayor profusión en el número cuatro de la revistaWindumanoth.

TAIEPI -- Emily Chuang is a veteran Taiwanese publisher who runs Emily Publishing Company in Taipei, and at the recent 2018 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, her company won first prize in the translation category for its Mandarin-language edition of the popular UK cookbook titled "Jerusalem."
The Taiwan version of "Jerusalem" beat out 20 other countries, including Communist Red China (PRC), to win the title of "Best in the World" for "Best Cookbook Translation." In addition, even though the annual Gourmand awards ceremony was held in Communist China, the Gourmand press release listed the winning translation as being from "Taiwan." This time, mind-controlled and brain-washed China was the sore loser and the free-wheeling democratic nation of Taiwan was the champion. Take that, Beijing, with your "Orwellian nonsense" propaganda is the laughingstock of the world.
"Jerusalem" was written in English by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi by two gay transplanted Israelis living in London and superbly and painstakingly translated into Mandarin by Ching-ying Wang.
There were over 100 categories in the annual Gourmand Awards, which were held last month in Yantai, Communist Red China, from May 25-28, according to its website.
Emily Chuang, editor-in-chief of Emily Publishing, has a funny story to tell, too. During the event, someone stole the display copy of "Jerusalem" -- an expensive book with a lovely cover -- and she couldn't believe it when she went to find it on the display table. Seems some people in Communist China lack manners and think stealing is fine as long as you don't get caught.
Not to worry. Emily had brought a personal copy of the book with her on her trip from Taiwan, and she was able to show that book to admiring fans during the awards ceremony.
When she told the organizers, Chuang said, they confirmed that it had been stolen and said only the best books at the awards tend to go missing. Someone in Communist China lacks table manners, so to speak, no pun intended.
Yotam Ottolenghi, the pioneering Israeli-born chef whose 2011 cookbook “Jerusalem: A Cookbook” helped boost the global excitement over modern Israeli cuisine, does not need an introduction here. Thanks to the London-based Ottolenghi’s distinctive way with the multiethnic flavors of Jerusalem, his cookbook has travelled far, with rave reviews in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.
When the Taiwan edition of “Jerusalem” was first launched in 2017 at a press conference in Taipei, Israel’s trade representative to Taiwan Asher Yarden and his wife Tamar helped with the PR by playing cook for a day to promote the book and their country to the Taiwanese media.The book, written by Yotam Ottolenghi and his business partner Sami Tamimi, includes a collection of 120 recipes that explore the rich flavors of Jerusalem, and the dishes reflect the celebrity chefs’ unique cross-cultural perspective.
Both men were born in Jerusalem, with Tamimi on the Arab east side and Ottolenghi in the Jewish west side.
How did the Taiwan translation of the book come to be?
Chuang, who is a veteran Taipei publisher and public relations maven (she helped launch J.K. Rowling’s ”Harry Potter” series in Taiwan’s Chinese-language editions), visited the Jerusalem Book Fair in 2013 and came away with a love for the local food and a dream to find a translator for the colorful cookbook she discovered there.
“Israel has delicious food, such as hummus and pita bread,” she told a reporter for the Taipei Times newspaper in 2017. “But these are not well known to many Taiwanese foodies.”
So W\what did Ambassador Yarden and his wife cook for the press conference a year ago? Two common Israeli dishes, naturally, ”shakshuka” and ”tabbouleh.”
Now comes word from Edouard Cointreau, the French director of Gourmand Magazine and the annual Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for international cookbooks, that the Taipei edition has won the “best cookbook translation” gong at this year’s awards ceremony.
It's a nice win for Taiwan, a country full of foodies and food festivals which cherishes its freedom and democracy -- and its distance from the "Orwellian nonsense" of Communist China on the other side of the Taiwan Strait.

愛米粒總編輯莊靜君表示,由奧圖蘭吉(Yotam Ottolenghi)和塔米米(Sami Tamimi)合著的「耶路撒冷」食譜書,入圍素有美食書奧斯卡獎之稱的美食書大獎。
根據美食書大獎網站資料,不論印刷或數位書籍都能參賽,今年有來自215國或地區的書籍爭取各獎項。
莊靜君指出,「耶路撒冷」中文書出版時,除了登上美國「聖地牙哥猶太世界報」,也獲以色列紙媒報導,受到美食書大獎創辦人關卓(Edouard Cointreau)的注意,鼓勵愛米粒出版社報名參賽。
莊靜君說,很多人對台灣的編輯和印刷品質感到驚艷,翻譯類的評審標準是以書的編輯和印刷品質為主。
她說,入圍名單中有兩本來自台灣,但實際上,另一本是中國大陸山東出版品,所以「耶路撒冷」是眾多入圍書中,唯一來自台灣的出版品。
